Journalism with impact
I am an award-winning journalist writing about disability, technology, politics, social issues, the environment, and consumer rights. My work has included investigations into dodgy practices by power companies and banks, the effects of artificial intelligence on Australian video workers, and exploitation of people with disability.
I have over five years of experience working in disability which drives me to tell compassionate and impactful stories about exploitation in Australian society.
I also post pictures of my dog in the hope that people will talk to me about him. His name is Merlin. Please ask me about him.
Awards
Democracy’s Watchdogs’ student award for investigative journalism 2024
“The judges liked Brendan’s story because it exposed how craftily energy drink companies like Red Bull had accessed huge markets of university students through student unions, sponsorships, marketing and give-aways while universities essentially looked the other way. ”
Ossie Award for Best Audio Story (long-form)
“A compelling podcast episode that’s difficult to pause. Brendan Kearns, Molly Frew and the University of Melbourne team have expertly stitched together historical accounts with personal narratives, crafting a compelling and unsettling exploration of Australia's atomic testing legacy at Emu Plains. Great long-form podcasts are not essays or a series of talking points. They are intimate experiences that take listeners on a journey, and that’s exactly what the team has created here.”
My Skills and Experience
Video Production
I am an experienced video producer and editor. I have made everything from documentaries and independent feature films to social media content and online courses. I’ve always got my eyes out for a story that can be told visually and won’t hesitate to bring out a camera.
Compassionate Storytelling
I strive to tell the untold, find what people don’t want me to know, and ask the tough questions. I lead with curiosity and empathy to tell stories that empower the disempowered.
